Baby milk or initial formula is suitable for infants from birth to one year of age. It is usually fed when breastfeeding is not possible and is intended to provide the baby with all the necessary nutrients. When it comes to baby milk, it is especially important that the product is safe and meets the nutritional needs of babies. Babies are considered to be a sensitive group of people and so foods for babies are subject to special controls and they are also subject to special regulations.
MOSH/MOAH detected in a test
In a recent test, mineral oil hydrocarbons, also known as MOSH/MOAH, were detected in two products. MOSH can accumulate in organs and MOAH can be carcinogenic. Currently, there are no limits for mineral oil hydrocarbons, however a regulation is already being worked on.
Fat pollutants found in initial milk
In the past, the fat contaminant 3-MCPD fatty acid ester was frequently found. This contamination can occur during the manufacturing process and should be kept as low as possible, as this compound can be harmful to health. In the current test, glycidyl fatty acid ester was detected in one sample, which is considered a probable carcinogen. According to Regulation (EU) 2020/1377, the maximum content of 50 µg/kg must not be exceeded for powdered formula milk.
Perchlorate also does not belong in formula milk
In another sample, perchlorate was detected, which is a disinfectant residue that can lead to inhibition of iodine absorption. Currently there is no maximum level for perchlorate in baby food, but the ALARA principle (= as low as reasonably achievable) applies.
